The city and the night, circa 1900.

Typescript of poem [unpublished?] with annotations in pen and pencil by the author and Ambrose Bierce. Annotations by the author include an additional stanza and proposed changes in wording. The second stanza of the typescript is crossed out and another stanza (in pencil) has been added at the top of the page with George Sterling's signature. Annotations by Ambrose Bierce are in red pencil and contain feedback and suggested changes on how the poem might be improved. Includes photocopy of the original frame backing that bore a description of the contents and an inscription by an unknown author, "For the Beloved Elise - Princess of the Pacific and Friend of Everyone." Also includes one photograph (b&w, 8 x 10) and negative of the actual work.

Ambrose Bierce was born in Horse Cave Creek, Ohio, on June 24, 1842. After military service in the Civil War, he settled in San Francisco, where he met Mark Twain and became a columnist and writer. Bierce became known for his sharp, sarcastic wit while writing for the "Argonaut," the "Wasp," and the "San Francisco Examiner."
